Active Recovery

Our active prehab and recovery programmes are designed to facilitate those who are newly diagnosed with cancer local to the community of Burton and East Staffordshire, to engage in appropriate exercise, undertake nutrition guidance and experience improved emotional well-being. The importance of ‘prehabilitation’ in cancer is a relatively new concept and active recovery is a growing idea and we are lucky enough in Burton to be able to offer such services through the Burton Albion Community Trust.

Patients are supported both before and after cancer treatment and where appropriate, undertake sessions in order to improve physical activity, fitness, nutrition and lifestyle habits. Research is positive around patients who undergo such prehab including improved overall outcomes, survival rates, tolerance to treatments, recovery from surgery and reduced post-surgery complications alongside, perhaps most importantly, improved mental health. This, of course, may reduce time spent in hospital or the need for potential readmission.

Activity takes place with appropriately qualified professionals and is tailored and individualised to patients’ ability level and personal preferences always considering secondary symptoms of cancer including fatigue, low mood and many others.

First and foremost we are looking to improve quality of life, during and after treatment, provide new motivation for people at potentially their most difficult time, a new focus and a friendly, knowledgeable and understanding ear aside from their other health care professionals. We become great friends and are passionate about seeing those that we work with return to work or a more ‘normal’ way of life for them, begin to feel that they are worthy of looking after themselves again and show up the very best that they can for themselves and those around them.
