HEAD of Community, Matt Hancock, will be taking on a cycling challenge with a twist to support Burton YMCA’s Sleepout 2019 on Friday, 8 November.
Matt will be completing a 60-mile round trip from the Pirelli Stadium alongside former Burton Albion Community Trust (BACT) Education Manager, Wayne Chadfield. The route includes visits to; Derbyshire YMCA’s Key College, Nottinghamshire YMCA’s Youth and Community Centre, and Burton YMCA’s Reconnect centre, before returning to The Pirelli Stadium to face the elements as Matt and Wayne join the sleepout.
Last year’s Sleepout saw 240 people take part over two venues, The Pirelli Stadium – where people chose to sleep in the concourses or outside the ground and St Modwen’s church in the graveyard, to raise funds to help the town’s homeless and raise awareness on the demands on homelessness services and provisions that appear to be increasing.
Funds raised by previous sleepout have supported Burton YMCA’s Reconnect Centre which provides an around the clock service available seven days a week, clients can benefit from on-site facilities including a lounge, shower, laundry room and counselling service.
Derbyshire YMCA’s Key College provides a range of accredited training courses for young people aged 16-18 and up to 24 in some instances with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan.
Nottinghamshire YMCA’s Youth and Community Centre is a hub for family and friends to get together and engage in fun activities and team sports.

Paul Laffey, Burton YMCA Chief Executive, said: “The money raised from the Sleepout makes a massive difference to the YMCA in supporting the most vulnerable people in our community. We support up to 10,000 people each year across all of our services. The funds raised helps us to transform lives.
“Burton Albion Community Trust has always been a big supporter of our work and we have worked closely on a number of projects in the past. Both Matt & Wayne have participated in a Sleepout before but we were delighted to hear that they wanted to add the cycling twist this year. Not only will it enable them to find out more about other YMCA’s but will also highlight that people often have to travel to access help and support if it is not available in their local area. We are very grateful that they have chosen to support us again this year and look forward to tracking their journey on the day and returning to Reconnect after their ride.”
